How To Properly Measure Your Tire Tread Depth by Vytas Banionis So what's this? A tire depth gauge? Yup. The NSX is a high performance car and since the rear tires do wear with enthusiastic driving, it's a good idea to check your tires often. You may think that checking the tread by feel of how close it's to the wear indicator may be all that's needed. That may be true to some degree but getting a more accurate reading is simply better. You know EXACTLY how much tread is left on your tires. You can measure it before and after a track event to see how much of your tires you used. Finger feeling simply won't do it. Below is a tire depth gauge. It's simply a small numbered rod with a pin sticking out at one end that slides in a tube.
Here's how it works. The rod inside the tube is pushed down so the pin sticks outward. You place the pin of tire dept gauge between the tire tread and then push downward until the two flaps make contact with the tire tread as pictured below. You can now take a reading.
In this example, I turned the tire outward and took a reading leaving the gauge on the tire. This front tire shows a tread depth of slightly less than 8/32.
This is nice gauge to have in the car. You could store it about just anywhere but I found a place in the trunk. There's a nice spot just below where the lugnut wrench is placed.
You may notice another item stored above the lugnut wrench. That's a wheel lock menioned on the wheel lock storage NSX Tips page.
